“David Amram is a godsend to those who believe in the power of music to change lives and inspire.” – Wynton Marsalis

“David Amram one of the most versatile and skilled musicians America has ever produced.” – The Washington Post

Legendary composer, performer, author and American treasure David Amram is coming to Indy to visit his dear friend of over 60 years – writer Dan Wakefield. Dan thought, while David’s in town, why not put on a show? Yeah, why not? It’s on.
Amram, backed by local saxophone phenom Sophie Faught and her band, will play a varied set featuring highlights from Amram’s rich canon, which includes movie soundtracks, jazz, orchestral pieces, world music and folk. Amram composed the soundtracks to the original Manchurian Candidate starring Frank Sinatra and Splendor in the Grass, starring Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty. He served as the composer-in-residence for the New York Philharmonic. Artists he has worked with include Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Charles Mingus, Pete Seeger, Leonard Bernstein and Willie Nelson. His work is, obviously, eclectic. Amram truly is “a different kind of cat.”

Amram is the subject of the documentary: David Amram: The First 80 Years, currently available on Vimeo.

A show highlight will be readings of the works of Jack Kerouac, including a reading by Dan Wakefield. Amram, who was a close friend of Kerouac, chronicles their friendship in his critically-acclaimed book Offbeat: Collaborating with Kerouac.

This will be a special evening of great music, stories and camaraderie. Not to be missed by fans of Amram, Wakefield, Kerouac and Sophie Faught.
