Rayford Griffin’s Reflections of Brownie

World class drummer Rayford Griffin’s tribute to his uncle, the late great trumpeter Clifford Brown. Blending the old with the new, this contemporary jazz offering re-imagines and updates the Clifford Brown classics and other titles from the hard bop era.

Indianapolis born drummer Rayford Griffin has toured and recorded with virtuosos, headliners and innovators, the likes of George Duke, Jean Luc Ponty, Stanley Clarke, Anita Baker, Rick Braun, Bette Midler, James Ingram, Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, Michael Jackson,… and many more.

It was the drum solos of Art Blakey and Max Roach on albums by his late, lamented uncle that lured Rayford to the drums. Being made pridefully aware of his uncle’s music very early in life, by his mother Geneva Brown Griffin (Clifford’s sister) and his aunt Larue Brown Watson (Clifford’s widow), deeply infuenced Rayford to become the far reaching musician that he is today.

“I’ve been wanting to do something very special with his music for years,” Rayford shares. “Some time ago, I started recording my gigs around LA playing his songs in a style faithful to the way he originally composed and performed them. When I listened back to the recordings, I realized that these songs have been played in the same fashion for decades, and really… how much better can anyone do this compared to the original statements he and the greats laid down?’ I knew then that I had to make a fresh and personal statement and represent his music in a different light’, I shifted my thinking.”

‘Had Uncle Clifford lived, how might he revisit his music today? “That thought process led me to the concept of modern versions of his tunes – a blending of the old and the new that retains all of the integrity of the compositions and the spirit therein.”

RAYFORD’S “REFLECTIONS” TOURING BAND is a quintet featuring some of LA’s best musicians, as well as occasional guest trumpet soloists. This commanding unit fueled by Griffin’s awe inspiring drumming delivers stylishly intricate arrangements of Clifford’s music that has put audiences on the edge of their seats in anticipation.
