Presented by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation join us for a magical night featuring saxophonist Rob Dixon the Indianapolis Jazz Collecetive (Steve Allee (pn), Nick Tucker (bs) & Kenny Phelps (dr)) & trumpeter John Raymond with a night in tribute to Freddie Hubbard & Joe Henderson.

John Raymond - IU professor of trumpet

John Raymond is making a name for himself as one of the most promising, genre-bending musicians in jazz today. With a singular voice as a trumpeter, flugelhornist and composer, Raymond is “steering jazz in the right direction” (Downbeat Magazine) by pushing it's boundaries, seamlessly incorporating indie-rock, folk and electronic influences into his music. As Something Else reviews stated, “This is jazz, yes, but jazz with an open mind’.

Rob Dixon

The music of Rob Dixon is both respectful of tradition and free with expression and truly shows the musical diversity that is within Rob’s creativity. After matriculating from Hampton University and Indiana University’s School of Music, Rob moved to the top of the music world in New York City working with legendary and popular artists such as the Count Basie Band, Tony Bennett, The Ellington Band, Slide Hampton, Dakota Stanton, The Illinois Jacquet Big Band, Rufus Reid, Akira Tana, Jonah Jones as well as Bill Lee (composer and father of Spike Lee), Weldon Irving, Producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad (DJ of Tribe called Quest) and The Skatalites, Returning to Indianapolis in 2003, Dixon has continued to work with internationally renowned artists such as pianist Steve Allee, drummer Steve Houghton, The Buselli Wallarab Jazz orchestra, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks, drummer Mike Clark, the headhunters, Guitarist Dave Stryker and 7 string guitar virtuoso Charlie Hunter.

As an educator, Steve is on the Jazz Faculty at the Jacob School of Music at Indiana University.

Steve’s artistry on the piano has gained him national recognition including 18 weeks in the Top 20 including the #1 spot on the national Jazz Week charts with the Rufus Reid ‘Out Front’ Trio!

Steve, a jazz pianist, has performed with Buddy Rich, Slide Hampton, James Moody, Rufus Reid, Steve Houghton, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, Sonny Fortune and has opened for Bill Evans and Tony Bennett

Kenny Phelps

With over 20 years experience on the local and national musical scenes, Kenny Phelps has developed a unique and valuable perspective on music. Playing and recording with musical giants such as BeBe & CeCe Winan, Walter Hawkins, El Debarge, Pharez Whitted, Roy Merriweather, Sly Hampton and George Duke has launched him into a respected spotlight in the music industry. He also has over 19 years of experience as a motivational speaker in schools, churches, and youth organizations. Rooted in the basic tradition of his craft, he has developed communication skills necessary to deliver a message that goes far beyond the music.

Nick Tucker

Bassist Nick Tucker is an active freelance musician in central and southern Indiana. In addition to his duties at Eastern Illinois University, Nick performs extensively in all areas of music. He performs with numerous jazz, Latin, and rock groups in Indianapolis, Bloomington, and throughout the Midwest. He has performed with Rich Perry, Alan Pasqua, Steve Allee, Brent Wallarab, Jason Tiemann, Mark Buselli, Luke Gillespie, and Randy Brecker. Nick has performed all over the United States, as well as in Rome; Bologna; Venice; Rosiario, Argentina; Kremünster, Austria; and Vienna. Nick holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies and Music Recording/Technology from the University of Indianapolis and a master’s degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University in Bloomington. In 2011, Nick was among 15 young talented jazz musicians invited to the Stean’s Institute Jazz Program at Ravinia where he studied with David Baker, Curtis Fuller, Rufus Reid, and Nathan Davis.
